What are some of the most recent advances regarding battery research? I've been of the opinion that Li-ion batteries are a crappy way of going about battery design for a while and I'm curious if there's been any serious alternatives developed. I believe there was an Fe-ion type researched recently but I know little about it. And of course I'm curious if nuclear batteries will ever be effective. Anything y'all got?

Zinc batteries are pretty cutting edge while being cheaper and more environmentally friendly then lithium.
The US is also one of the world’s largest (5th largest?) producers of zinc. So go figure, they can easily power grids with this
